Former Miami Hurricane starting quarterback Robert Marve announced Thursday afternoon that he will be transfering to Purdue this fall.

“(This is a) very exciting opportunity for the Boilermaker’s,” said Coach Danny Hope said in a teleconference Thursday. “Anytime we can get one of the nation’s top players on our football team it’s something to celebrate.”

The redshirt sophomore, who will have to sit out the 2009 season due to NCAA transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2010.

“He’s a great athelete,” Hope said. “He has an exeptional arm. Very athletic, very fast. He’s a premiere athlete.”

Earlier this week, Marve had been undecided between Purdue and Tennessee. His announcement came on ESPN’s College Football Live.

“I felt very comfortable being there,” Marve said of Purdue Thursday, “with Coach (Gary) Nord as the offensive coordinator and Coach Hope being the new head coach. I’m very excited to be running the spread offense again and being in a family-oriented place, and I’m looking forward to playing some football.”

Coming out of high school, Marve was ranked the No. 8 quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com. He played one season at the University of Miami during 2008 after missing his freshman year do to injuries sustained during a car accident.

He had 11 consecutive starts. Marve threw 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns, completing 116 passes out of 213 attempts. In high school, he was named Florida’s Mr. Football in addition to a member of the Parade All America team.
